Central Oregon Recycle/Reuse Guide

Welcome to the first Recycle/Reuse Guide for residents, buildersand contractors throughout Central Oregon! This guide is a collaborative effort between the Community Affairs Committee of the CentralOregon Building Green Council and the Central Oregon EnvironmentalCenter. It is designed to be a comprehensive tool and resource for the community and is the result of many months of gathering information, verifying with recyclers/vendors, and designing this guide to be as
user-friendly as possible.

Reusing and recycling are important aspects of the “Reduce-Reuse-Recycle” solution to resource consumption, but reducing our consumption in the first place is a key component to minimizing our environmental impact. Every item that we bring into our homes and workplaces is the result of many resources- raw materials, time, energy, fossil fuels, and more. Reusing, recycling or disposing of these items results in the further use of these resources as well. In 2006, approximately 60% of the total tonnage into Knott Landfill was comprised of Construction & Demolition (C&D) Waste, and about 40% was comprised of household waste. The current life expectancy of Knott Landfill is that it will be at full capacity by as early as 2029 based on incoming tonnage throughout 2007 & 2008.

This information was compiled from recycler’s/vendor’s websites, handouts, and information gathered over the phone. It was then verified by volunteers serving on the BGC’s Community Affairs Committee and the Central Oregon Environmental Center. It does not include specific pricing information or details regarding the desired condition of the materials being accepted. It is, therefore, essential that you call any & all of the vendors listed here ahead of time to confirm acceptance of materials.

We welcome your feedback on how this guide is/is not working for you and we’re open to your suggestions on how to make it better! Drop us a line at 389-1058 if you find a misprint with materials or contact information so we can update the next version. Most importantly, we intentionally limited production of hard copies of this guide to encourage the use of the paper-free, downloadable version that is available online at www.coba.org. Thanks so much and happy recycling/reusing!
