Cascade Custom Homes (CCH) strives to provide clients with the home that they want, no more, no less. Cascade Custom Homes specializes in creating fine custom homes for discerning clients, from concept to completion. The bulk of their work is one of a kind custom homes on the owners land, with homes whose styles are as diverse as the people that they build for. While experienced in building multi-family, small family homes, and an occasional addition to an existing home, the majority of their work is in the mid to upper level executive homes. CCH will create a custom design, arrange for a home designer to develop or modify an existing design, or work with an owner’s pre-selected home designer. Often a client brings plans that are ready to go, or stock plans that need some modification. The path to a completed set of blueprints is tailored to best suit the clients needs.
CCH strives to meet the goals of their clients, and give them the best information for them to make informed decisions. Additionally CCH looks to provide only what the client wants, not trying to sell owners on expensive finishes or equipment that is not in their best interest. Each homeowner has different goals and items of importance that have to fit into their budget. A builder’s duty is to listen to the owner first to determine what is most important and what their end-goal for the project is. Afterwards inform them of different aspects, construction methods and materials, and options that they should consider for their project that may have been overlooked. So often something is desired, but out of reach financially. If an active solar system is desired, but the owner’s budget does not allow for installation of the system, preparations are easy and not too expensive for a future installation, usually at a small fraction of the whole system’s cost. The important thing in this case is to prepare for future additions as much as possible. Of course, if the project’s budget is no object, there seems to be no end to the exciting materials and systems that can be incorporated into a home.
Much of a homes construction can be “green” without spending more money than that of a conventionally built home. How the home sits on the land and the homes design starts the custom home process, and passive solar aspects can easily be incorporated at this stage. Many choices that are typically made for a home’s finish, such as tile or wood floors, are part of the green building concept, and are also common choices made for custom homes. Besides deciding on such amenities as flooring and countertops owners can decide on what, if any, passive and active solar aspects they would like incorporated in their home. Quite often there is a desire for improvements such as alarm systems or active solar elements, which are not financially in the reach of the owner at the time of construction, or owners are not sure they want such a system. In these cases preparation work can be done for future systems that are not very expensive, but make the systems much easier and less expensive to install at a later date. Often preparation is done with the idea of re-salability. The key is listening and good communication from the initial meeting. In fact prompt communication, documentation, and follow through are especially important in custom home construction.
There are typically many changes during any construction process, whether simple color changes, or perhaps adding another thousand square feet to a home. This is particularly true in custom home construction. Changes should not only be accurately documented, and acted on in a timely fashion. A change in the exterior color of a house is not a big deal unless the home is not painted the correct color at the end. Incorrect communication from the owner - to the builder - to the sub-contractor will result in trying times for all, and some expensive fixes. CCH provides exceptional communications through-out the construction process.
CCH enjoys the opportunity and challenge of trying new construction practices where they fit with the owner’s needs or desires. CCH also tries to keep consistent workmanship, which is why most of the same sub-contractors are used today as at the beginning of operations.
Tom Pryor started his construction career in 1979, framing homes, continuing a building tradition started by a great-grandfather in Maine. Tom worked for a lumber company while going to school for a degree in general math & science. His material supply career spanned 20 years and encompassed just about all positions in the business, from forklift and truck driver to general manager. Products included lumber, trusses, cabinets, door and millwork, staircases, and windows. Tom was also involved in “turn-key” framing and door and millwork operations where both material and labor are provided to large builders. In 2000 Tom and his family moved to Central Oregon from the Portland area. Shortly after arriving in the area a client proposed Tom run their custom home building company. Two years later he went out on his own.
Tom is committed to his clients’ satisfaction and oversees each home’s construction from concept to completion.
Tom’s involvement with COBA through the committees and board membership not only fulfills a desire to give something back to the industry, but helps him grow professionally. COBA is also on the cutting edge of what is transpiring in the construction field locally, regionally, and nationally. “You have joined, why not take the next step and become more active in the organization. You will gain more than you would have thought possible.”
Past clients testimonials have a recurring theme, and include words like: responsive, honest, strong sense of integrity and fairness, trustworthy, professional, completed on time and within budget, excellent communication, organized, patient, prompt and straight forward, willing to cooperate, highly recommended, and “made my first building project a pleasant experience”.
“We strive to provide value and quality in every aspect of a homes construction, and incorporate progressive, energy efficient and sustainable building practices in each home, to the degree of each individual owners taste and budget.”
